Breasts are also the seat of all types of sothas (inflammations), vranas (ulcers), granthims and arbudas.

Due to the natural dilatation of orifices of these dhamanis of pregnant or puerperal woman the dosas can reach there, thus, they are susceptible for breast-disorders.

Arbuda is a disease which grows very fast and causes either destruction of local tissues or body part or even death.

Lotions and Potions
Hard breasts - A few drops of oil of Camphor (Karpoor) mixed in two tablespoons of Olive oil (Jaitun tel) may be used to massage ‘hard breasts’. (But it is not advisable for nursing mothers).

Lactation - All these have herbs given below have added benefit of giving breasts an alluring roundness as well as of counteracting post-natal depression. Half teaspoon of sage infused in one cup of boiling water when drunk three times a day has the reverse effect and dries up the flow of the milk.

  • Mallows

  • Borage (Pattharchuri, Patta ajwain),

  • Watercress (Jalkhumbi),

  • Parsley (Ajmod, Prajmoda),

  • Fennel (Saunf),

  • Anise (Saunf),

  • Cumin,

  • Carrots,

  • Lentils, and

  • Fenugreek

Mastitis - Calendula ointment also helps in treating breast disorders. Warm Poultices are standard and comforting remedy for mastitis.

Baked potatoes, turnips freshly cooked (not baked) beans pounded with olive oil, hot plasters also are useful.

Take one teaspoon each of dried Aniseed (saunf), Marjoram (Marwa, sathra), half teaspoon dried fenugreek and honey. Add the herbs to 600ml (1 pint) boiling water for ten minutes. This potion improves the flow of breast milk. A poor flow of milk is always considered to be one of the causes of mastitis in nursing mothers.

Painful breasts

To make massage oil for the breasts, shake together 4 tablespoons each of apricot and wheat germ oil. Warm it and massage over painful breasts.

Sore and cracked nipples To prevent sore and cracked nipples, rub the nipples with a mixture of pure lemon juice and olive oil throughout pregnancy.

Whilst nursing add a few drops of essential oil of geranium to a pot of cold cream and soothe the nipples with this.

Honey mixed with Olive oil or Lanolin (thick tacky fat available with dispensing stores or druggists, has a softening and moisturizing effect and is a good skin food) is used to anoint cracked nipples.

Lanolin rubbed into the nipples soothes and softens but before using make sure you are not allergic to it.
