Gargling
Gargling with cold milk or Yastimadhu kwath has a cooling and cleansing action on the mouth and is useful in stomatitis. Gargling with hot water exerts cleansing action on the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue. One should also use til oil for gargling. The proportion of til oil should be one teaspoon of til oil in two hundred milliliters of water.
  • It imparts a light and fresh feeling to the mouth.
  • Gargling with til oil exerts a cleansing and strengthening action on the tongue, gums, teeth, mouth and voice.
  • It prevents stomatitis.
  • It is extremely useful for curing hypersensitivity of gums to sour articles.
  • It also improves the sense of taste.
  • Gargling strengthens the teeth of an individual.  It enables the individual to eat food of his choice.
Gandusha and Kavala
Gandusha and Kavala are both variants of gargling:
  • Gandusha is filling the mouth to three fourth its capacity with liquid without allowing its movement inside and holding the liquid for three kala (one kala is the time taken to rotate one's finger around one's own knee). One should hold the fluid in the mouth till the nose and eyes start watering. The main function of gandusha is to provide strength to the gums, buccal cavity, eyes and nose.

  • Kavalagraha is filling the mouth to half its capacity with liquid to make it move briskly inside and spitting out quickly. It exerts a soothing and cleansing action on the mouth.
Cleaning of Tongue
The tongue cleaner should be soft and smooth, with rounded edges. The length of tongue cleaner should be ten angulis (fingers). To clean tongue, leaf or a thin plate of gold, silver, and copper can also be used. Copper helps in reducing kapha and tongue being the site of bodhak kapha, the metal helps in removing excess kapha.

Mala-Tyga (Expulsion of waste products)

  • Persons with kapha constitution should exercise regularly and eat leafy vegetables. Such person should take evacuation enema (niruha basti). He can also have Haritaki or Triphala powder as advised by the physician. The quantity to be taken is 1 gm to 3 gm with warm water.
