Urges which need to be suppressed and that are beneficial to man are known as suppressible urges. The urges, which should be controlled, are:
- Rashness and evil impulses of mind, speech and body
- Greed
- Grief
- Fear
- Anger
- Vanity
- Shameless-ness
- Jealousy
- Too much of attachment and malice.
Those who are desirous of their welfare should suppress rashness and evil impulses of mind, speech and body. One should always control the impulses of greed, grief, fear, anger, vanity, shameless-ness, jealousy, too much of attachment and malice. Even the impulse for speech that is harsh, extravagant, insinuating, untrue and untimely should be controlled. Activities that are injurious to others, i.e. adultery, theft, inflicting pain etc. should be avoided.
The virtuous one, who is free from all vices related to the mind, speech and physical action, is indeed happy and he alone enjoys the fruits of virtue (dharma), wealth (artha), and desire
(Kama).
