The following changes are seen in the foetus (month wise).
Embryo in First Month
In the first month, atma or the soul possessing all the qualities gets mixed up or vitiated by all dhatus and attains a mucoid appearance. The fertilised egg become kalala (morula) in one night, budbuda (blastocyst) in seven nights, pinda (collapse of blastocyst for implantation) in 15 days and solid in one month.

Embryo in Second Month
  • Buds of various parts like head, lower extremities and calf muscles alongwith abdomen and sacral region appear in this month.

Embryo in Third Month
  • Buds of the body parts which appear in the second month, get differentiated in this month.

Foetus in Fourth Month
  • Foetus becomes stable during this month.
  • All the body parts and organs become more conspicuous.
  • Manifestation of heart alongwith consciousness takes place.
  • Development of organs, those appeared in this month, become complete.
  • The head becomes more stronger and appearance of roma (lanugo) has been observed in this month.
  • The word dauhrda means desires of fetus expressed through mother.
  • Appearance of 'indriyas' mana also gets associated thus, fetus may have feelings of happiness and sorrow.
  • It also starts quivering and expresses his desires through mother.
  • Thus, in 4th month foetus desires the subjects of indriyas like sound, touch, vision, taste and smell.

Foetus in Fifth Month
  • During this month vertebral column develops, muscles develop and blood volume increases.
  • The mana of foetus becomes enlightened and consciousness develops and it becomes more sujiva (capable of living independently).

Foetus in Sixth Month
  • During sixth month, foetus has relatively more energy, improvement in complexion and buddhi (intelligence) becomes more enlightened.
  • Body hairs, nails, bones, tendons, vessels, skin, mouth, nose, eyes and ears develop.

Foetus in Seventh Month
  • In seventh month, foetus has all the features with all the body parts fully developed and gets associated with tridosas (vata, pitta and kapha).

Foetus in Eighth Month
  • By the eighth month, foetus is fully matured with all the features.
  • Oja remains unstable in the foetus during this month. Instability is probably due to immaturity of foetus (immunological unstability) in this month thus, the oja moves from mother to foetus and from foetus to the mother through rasa carrying channels.
  • Due to this transfer of oja, any one among foetus and mother may have deficiency of oja and at the same time other may have full oja. The deficiency causes difficulty in surviving.
  • The child born in this month may die due to absence of ojas and influence of raksasas (micro-organisms).

Foetus in Ninth and Tenth Month
  • The foetus matures in this period and is ready for delivery.
