| Post Partum Care of
the Mother |
 |
Sushruta
and other Acharyas have mentioned special life style and
food habits for puerperal women up to 45 days after
delivery.
In
general all the classics have advised massage, oral
administration of fats with medicines and decoctions for
three to seven days after delivery, use of medicated
rice gruel is also prescribed in the diet. From seventh
or twelfth day medicated meat soup is advised.
However
there is slight difference of opinion in the list of
drugs amongst various authors.
Her
abdomen should be massaged and wrapped properly with a
big clean cloth. This wrapping produces compression of
abdomen, thus prevents presence of hallow space, so the
vayu does not get vitiated.
The woman should be given
good irrigation with hot water and should avoid anger,
exercise and coitus.
Also
Vedas have mentioned different types of post delivery
complications and their management like:
-
The woman should be reassured and advised to lie on her abdomen.
-
She should be massaged with bala oil on her back, sides and lower abdomen and sweating should be induced.
-
The lax abdomen should be tied with a bandage.
-
She should be given ghee, mutton soup or rice kanji
medicated with pippali, pippalimula, cavya, citraka, ginger, cumin seeds, saindhava and pepper.
-
She should be given krsna-bala in the dose of one gram
twice a day with jaggery for its purifying effect on the uterus
-
Dasamularista in the dose of one ounce twice a day should be given.
-
Castor oil should be administered if she is constipated.
-
For restoring normal size of the uterus, powder of
lata, karanja
and pippalimula should be given for seven to eight days or longer if necessary.
|
| From the Second to the
Tenth day |
 |
-
The vulva should be cleaned with warm water and exposed to the smoke of Ajamoda and
Satahva.
-
She should be given rice kanji and ghee as well as milk medicated with Pancakola or Laghupancamula for first five days.
-
After five days, the diet should be stepped up to Rice, Soup of
Munga, Kulattha , Java, fruits, mutton soup, ghee, Kusmanda, Carrot and Cucumber.
-

-
From 3rd or 4th day onwards, she should be given a bath preceded by oil massage.
-

-
The bath can be started on the first day itself, if she is not
weak.
|
| The Diet and Regime

 |
-

Jangala, i.e. in dry climate and in a lady with good
digestive power, ghee or oil should be administered in large
quantities.
-
If a male child is born, the mother should be given Tila
oil or Coconut oil and if a girl is born, the mother should be
given ghee.
-
