  • Powder of Haridra or Rajani (Curcuma longa) impregnated with goat's urine should be taken orally.

       Local Contraceptives
  • After the stoppage of menstrual flow, the genital tract is fumigated with the smoke of Margosa wood by burning it.
  • A piece of rock salt smeared with Sesame oil should be kept in the vaginal tract, before coitus to prevent conception.
  • A tampon consisting of rock salt and oil should be inserted into the vaginal tract after coitus, which works as a contraceptive.
  • A fine paste prepared with the seeds of Palasha (Butea Monosperma), honey and ghee should be kept inside the vagina in sufficient quantity.

       Oral contraceptives 

  • Old sugar-candy with milk is taken with rice-wash in the form of linctus to produce sterility in woman without affecting her sexual passion.
     
  • Roots of Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica)
    The roots of Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica)  is boiled with rice-wash. After filtration, the decoction is taken consecutively for three days after the stoppage of menstrual flow.
     
  • Fruit of Kadamba (Anthocephalus indicus) added with honey, one-fourth in quantity, if taken for three days after the stoppage of the menstrual flow along with hot water, produces sterility in woman.
     
  • Seed of Sarshapa
    When taken for seven days during the period of fertilization along with white rice-wash as vehicle causes sterility in the woman.

    Rice grains and sugar are added to Sarshapa. These three are mixed in equal quantities with rice-wash and consumed to stop menstruation. 

    Sarshapa after triturating with Gingely oil is taken for three days during menstrual period.
     
  • Seeds of palasha
    Seeds of Palasha (Butea Monosperma) are to be powdered and taken with water for three days during the time of fertilization. 

    Fruit of Kshirivriksha (Mimusops bexandra) and flower of Shalmali are added to seeds of Palasha and then taken with alcohol for 15 days for producing sterility in the woman. 

    Seed of Palasha tree is made into a paste by adding honey and then taken during the menstrual period. This will prevent both menstruation and conception in future.
     
  • Flowers of Japa 
    Flower of Japa (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is described to produce sterility in the woman. 

    If taken during the time of delivery it prevents future conception. If at all there is conception, the foetus will not grow; i.e. there will be an abortion.
     
  • Roots of Tanduliyaka
    Administration of the root of Tanduliyaka (Amaranthus) is made into a paste by adding rice-wash to a woman after her menstruation for three day. This will enable to make her sterile.
     
  • Haridra
    One piece of the rhizome of Haridra (Curcuma longa) should be taken for six days continuously (three days during menses and three days thereafter.)
     
  • Trapusa (Cucumis sativus)- 
    Intake of the paste prepared of the leaves of shelu (Cordia dichotoma) is described in Bhaishajya ratnavali to stop menstruation.
     
  • Leaves of Patha 
    After taking purificatory bath after menstruation, if the woman takes the leaves of Patha (Cissampelos pareira) she will not conceive.
     
  • Flowers of Shalmali
    Intake of the flower of shalmali (salmalia malabarica) is stated to cause sterility. 
     
  • Fruits of Bakula
    Fruit of Bakula (Mimusops elengi) is made into a paste by grinding it with alcohol. It will stop menstruation, if taken during the period of menstruation.

 

  • Maricha (Piper nigrum)- 
    The paste of white variety of Maricha (Piper nigrum) made with sugar water, if taken for three days during menstruation, will stop future menstruation.
     
  • Leaves of Champaka 
    Leaves of Champaka (Michelia champaca) are to be soaked in water overnight.  The paste, when administered during the period of menstruation prevents conception. 

    The years for which this contraceptive remains effective coincides with the number of leaves taken as per the method described above.
     
  • Leaf of Tala 
    Powder of Tala (Borassus flaberllifer) leaf mixed with Red ochre taken with cold water on the fourth day of menstrual period, causes sterility.
     
  • Gunja (Abrus precatorius)- 
    Some people use the entire seed and some others use only the cotyledons removing the epicarp after soaking it in water for one night. 

    Administration of one Gunja (white variety) on the fourth day of menstruation, two on the fifth day and three on the sixth day is stated to prevent conception for three years.
      
  • Castor seeds (Ricinus communis)-
    Administration of the pulp of one or two castor seeds during the menstrual period is stated to prevent fertilization for one and two years respectively.
     
  • Agnimantha 
    Administration of a decoction prepared with the root - bark of Agnimantha (Clerodendrum phlomidis) together with rice-wash causes sterility.
      
  • Flower of Jambu
    Flowers of Jambu (Syzygium cumini) triturated with the urine of the cow causes sterility in woman when taken during the time of menstruation.
      
  • Old ghee
    Intake of three- year-old ghee for 15 days makes the woman sterile.
     
  • Talisha 
    Leaf of Talisha (Abies webbiana) mixed with equal quantity of Gairika (ochre) produces sterility in woman.
      
  • Badari (Zizyphus jujuba)
    After menses, if a woman takes Badari (Zizyphus jujuba) and lac boiled in Gingelly oil, she will not conceive.
     
  • Pippalyadi churna
    Pippali (Piper longum), Vidanga (Embelia ribes) and Tankana (Borax), powdered in equal quantities and if taken with milk during the period of fertilization, there will be no conception.
     
  • Dhatryadi churna 
    The powders of Dhatri (Emblica officinalis), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) and Abhaya (Terminalia chebula), when taken with water stops menstruation.
     
  • Rasanjanadi Churna 
    A powder prepared of Rasanjana (aqueous extract of Berberis aristata), Vacha (Acorus calamus) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), taken with cold water, stops menstruation. Hence, there will be no conception.
     
  • Krishnajitakadi vati 
    Powder of Kala jira (Carum carvi), Kachura (Curcuma zedoaria), Nagakesara (Mesua ferrea), Kalaunji (Nigella sativa) and Katphala (Myrica nagi), taken in equal quantities are triturated by adding water, and made into pills.
      
  • Chandandi churna 
    A powder of Sandalwood, Mustard and Sugar taken in equal quantities and mixed with rice-wash and administered makes the woman sterile.
      
  • Kutajadi churna
    The woman who takes the fruits of Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica), Kadamba (Anthocephalus indicus), Balaka (Valeriana wallichii) and Chandana (Santalum album) along with wine becomes sterile.

From the above formulations one can develop herbal contraceptive pills as it will be safe compared to available hormonal therapies which have varied hazardous effect on the body.
