Qualities of good food
  • The food that pleases one's mind 
  • Clean 
  • Wholesome 
  • Freshly cooked, 
  • Lukewarm and 
  • Slightly oily. 
  • It is always advisable to have food in the company of near and dear ones. 
Contraindicated food
  • Very salty, cold and dry food 
  • Excessively hot or cold; 
  • Spicy or bitter. 
  • Food should neither be taken too fast nor too slow. 
Quantity of food
         As for as the quantity of food is concerned, neither the belly should be over filled nor should it remain empty. Empirically, approximately ½ of the capacity of stomach should be filled with food and the rest ½ should be filled with equal quantities of water and some space for movement of gases.
Virudha ahar (Antagonistic food material)
         Two food recipes, which are not to be taken together, are known as Virudha ahar (antagonistic in character). Some common examples of Virudha ahar are as follows:
  • Milk with fish, 
  • Meat or any sour fruit; 
  • Fish along milk products or sweets; 
  • Honey and ghee or 
  • Honey and oil. 
  • It is believed that such antagonistic materials act like poison on body tissues, if taken together.
