Svasthavritta is a science of Health, which prescribes the theory, and practice of the maintenance of public and private health. Svasthavritta in Ayurveda means maintenance of health of an individual. The word swasthavritta is made of three words SVA, STHA, VRITTA.
SVA -
means one's own i.e. one's own life
STHA -
means stability and means one who stands i.e. one
who is stable.
VRITTA - means the act or the behaviour.

Thus Svasthavritta means the behaviour or act by which a person can maintain health and lead a healthy life.

A person is considered to possess a healthy body only if
  • All the three doshas are working in a well-balanced condition.
  • The digestive system is functioning normally.
  • The physically harmful constituents are proportionate, well balanced and functioning normally.
  • The physically harmful constituents are properly discharged out of the system.
  • The soul, the mind and the organs are satisfactorily acting their parts for mutual pleasure and happiness.
Svasthavritta desires that every one should stand firm in carrying out his duties towards himself, so as to lead a happy, healthy and prosperous life.

Svastha means
  • One whose doshas (vital catalysts), agni (fire) and functions of dhatu (metals) and malas (waste products) are in a state of equilibrium and who has a cheerful mind, intellect and sense organs is termed as 'Svastha' (healthy).

  • The healthy body should be preserved and in unhealthy conditions the physician should diminish or promote doshas, dhatus and malas till he becomes free from disorder, which is the indicator of equilibrium.

  • The rules and regulations in respect to maintaining proper well being of the physique are two-fold:
    • Consumption of diet and
    • Observance of personal, moral, seasonal and spiritual conduct (for different age and personal disposition groups, the rules are well drafted and presented in Ayurveda).

  • It is said that those who do not follow the rules are more likely to fall prey to the illness of different nature. But, regardless to these rules also, people may fall sick, due to factors like outburst of epidemics and endemics (Janpadodhwansa), ageing and accidental injuries, which are beyond human control, such conditions need special attention.

  • It will not be out of context to mention that the predominance of doshas (vital catalysts) Vata, Pitta, or Kapha play a major role in an individual's physical and mental disposition (Prakriti). An individual, constitutionally predominant in any one of the particular dosha is more vulnerable to the illnesses specifically related to that dosha.

  • But if he observes certain routine precautions and conditions with the requirements of his physical disposition, he can keep these diseases at bay, and remain healthy.

  • Just for example, while it is good for an obese person to avoid high calorie/high fat diet, it is desirable for a lean and thin person to consume such high calorie diet for improving general health. It could be the case while observing personal/seasonal conduct or taking drugs also.

  • Ayurveda also recommends that whether it is the state, of good health or of sickness, the food and conduct mainly determine the component of the physical well being.

  • If your food is a good combination of nutrients and fiber, and is right for your age, constitution, habitat and climate, it is a long lasting guarantee of sound health.

Psychic Factors
  • While the physical factors like doshas influence greatly in deciding the physical constitution (Shareer Prakriti), the psychic factors named as
    • Sattwa (Equanimity factor)
    • Raja (Agitating factor)
    • Tama (Inertia factor) determine the Psyche of a person.
  • Psychic factors are extremely indistinct and manifest only through an individual's behaviour, moral character and his ability to tackle the circumstances.
  • Sattwa is considered to be the balancer of the rest two,  Rajas and Tama.
  • The Tama makes one dull and morose, hence the balance by Sattwa.
  • One should always endeavour to maintain the psychological balance through the special psycho-spiritual exercises such as meditation, to keep the Sattwa strong.
  • In turn, this practice also helps in maintaining the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
  • Conclusions drawn by researchers on the basis of their experiences also suggest that the diet can also influence the balance of Sattwa, Raja and Tama in our psyche.

Essential Food
  • A healthy person should consume a balanced diet consisting of all the six tastes in moderate amount.
  • Food should always be hot, fresh, and eaten at an appropriate time.
  • Modifications should be made according to the basic constitution of a person.
