Cauterization, called as Agnikarma, is a process wherein an instrument mostly a probe or a needle, is heated and then applied on the diseased area of the body.

Importance of Cauterization
|
|
Fire cautery has been considered to be superior to medicines, surgical measures and caustics as a method of treatment. Fire cautery treatment is superior to the caustics :
- As the disease treated by it do not relapse and
- Those incurable by medicines, operations and caustics also yield to it.
Example : Use of Fire cautery for treating Splenomegaly.
In order to bring relief from splenomegaly, the surgeon should apply fire cautery with a heated arrow over the vein coursing near the left thumb after slightly flexing the wrist.

Patterns of Cauterization
|
|
- Circular,
- Dotted,
- Linear
- Flat designs of cauterizations
Cauterization is basically of two types :
- Skin cauterization and
- Muscular cauterization.
In surgery cautery is not contraindicated even for blood vessels, ligaments, joints and bones. Selection of design is done by the surgeon on basis of site, size and shape of the lesion.
