The word kriya means action and kala means time. Therefore, the literal meaning of the word kriyakala is treatment time.

Kriyakala describes mode and stage of development of disease. It refers to the proper diagnosis of stages of disease and adopting preventive and curative measures of aushadh, ahara and charya (drug, diet and activities).

If we ignore our health, the disease process (Samprapti) sets in. This means, instead of three stages, six different stages are produced and a well manifested disease known as Roga begins.

These six stages of kriyakala are as follows:
  • Sanchaya (Stage of accumulation or increased level): At this stage, the doshas accumulate and stagnate in their own places and do not circulate freely.

  • Prakopa (Stage of excitation): In this stage, the doshas get 'excited' and accumulate in excess.

  • Prasara (Stage of spread): At this stage, the excited and accumulated doshas spread to other parts, organs, and systems of the body, leaving their original sites.

  • Sthanasamsraya (Stage of localisation): At this stage, the doshas enter the individual cells of the tissue or organ and cause their slight dysfunction.

  • Vyakti (Stage of manifestation): At this stage, the classical symptoms and signs of the disease become apparent.

  • Bheda (Stage of complication/differentiation): At this stage, if not treated properly and in time, they may become chronic or incurable.
    • It is said that the duty of a physician or an individual by himself is to control the doshic aggravation at earlier stages in order to maintain/ restore the good health.
    • Since the pathogenesis mainly depends on the altered doshas, the treatment should be aimed at
      • restoring the chemical constitution of a dosha if deranged,
      • sub-due their levels if they are excited,
      • and stimulate their levels if they are subdued.
    • Observing the precautions and following the directions given by a physician on the three Ds of health, a person can achieve the state of equilibrium.
    • These three Ds are
      • Aahar (Diet)
      • Vihar (Deeds)
      • Aushadh (Drugs)
    • The three Ds suggested by ancient physicians matter a lot in maintaining the three-dimensional structure of healthy human body.
