Introduction

The ashtavidha pariksha (eightfold examination) includes the examination of nadi (pulse), jivha (tongue), shabda (voice), sparsha (skin), drka (vision), akruti (appearance), mutra (urine) and mala (stool). It gives an idea of the patient's general condition and the type of illness.

The Examination
In akruti pariksha, the face reading is done, physical features are examined and the diseases are guessed. The following points are examined:
  • Skin colour: Black, white, fair and wheatish colours are the normal colours of the body and blue, green, yellow, coppery-red and pale white are the abnormal colours.

  • Body structure: Body parts in symmetrical proportions are supposed to be normal.

  • Body strength: Body strength is made up of body elements, which are of eight types. If all the eight types are in exact proportions, then the person is considered to be of good strength.

  • Height and weight: Height and weight of the body in exact proportions are supposed to be good for health.
