            According to Ayurveda, 'Takra', is like Nectar to human beings as 'Amruta' is to Gods. One who consumes buttermilk every day will not suffer from diseases.
 
Method of preparation
            It is a mantha kalpa, obtained after churning the curd with half part of water.
 
Properties
  • It should be devoid of fat content, 
  • It should not be too thick or thin in consistency and 
  • It should have sweet, sour and astringent tastes.
     
Types of Takra
           Depending upon the quantity of water to be added and method of preparation of takra, it has been explained under 5 distinctive headings by Bhavamisra. Viz :
Ghola
           It is obtained after churning the curd without adding any water and without removing the fat content (butter).
Properties :
  • Ghola, when consumed with sugar acts as vata pittanashak
  • Gives satisfaction.
     
Mathita
            It is churned curd free from cream.
Properties : Mathita is Kapha-Pitta nashaka [vitiates increased kapha and pitta doshas]in its effect.
 
Takra
           'Takra', is also a churned curd but is prepared by adding Όth part of water. According to Susrta; Takra is free from Sneha part and is secured after churning the curd with ½ part of water. It will have sweet, sour and astringent tastes.
 
Properties :
  • Takra have Madhura, Amla and Kasaya-rasa.
  • Virya[-Ushna[hot]
  • Guna-Laghu ,[light] Ruksha [dry], Agni dipaka [appetizer], Grahi [ binds stools].
  • Vipaka- Madhura [sweet]
  • Karma [functions]-Hrudya [strenthens cardiac muscels]; srotovisodhaka.[ opens all the channels of the body]
  • Tridosahara : 
    • Vatahara - because of Amla rasa, ushna virya.
    • Kaphahara because of Ushna Virya, Ruksha guna and Kasaya rasa.
    • Pittahara because of its Madhura Vipaka.
Indications:
  • Grahani[sprue syndrome], 
  • Pandu[ anaemia],
  • Arsas,[piles]
  • Pliha[spleenomegaly],
  • Gulma[tumour]
  • Aruchi[anorexia nervosa], 
  • Vishamajwara[fever]
  • Trshna[thirst],
  • Chardi[hyperemesis]
  • Sula[colic pain]
  • Mutrakrcchra[anuria], 
  • Sneha-Vyapat Sopha[oedema due to complications of oleation therapy], 
  • Garavisa[poison intake].
Contra indications :
  • Kaphavataja Vyadhis Kshata [fatigue],
  • Ushnakala [during hot atmosphere], 
  • Weak Person, 
  • Murccha [unconciousness]
  • Bhrama [giddiness]
  • Daha [burning sensation]
  • Rakta Pitta
     
Udaswit
           Udaswit is prepared by churning curd with ½ part of water.
Properties: 
  • It is Kaphakara [increases kapha dosha] 
  • Balya [energizer]
  • Ama dosanasaka [destroys toxic material].
     
Chacchika
           To have 'Chacchika', curd is churned without adding water, cream is removed and once again churned with sufficient quantity of water.
Properties:
  • It is Laghu for digestion and is cooling in its effect. 
  • It is useful in Srama[fatigue], trshna[thirst], Pitta and Vata Vikaras.
