Painting,
drawing, singing, playing musical instruments, dancing and
acting are powerful and exciting forms of self-expression. They have become a valuable therapeutic tool, in the
rehabilitation of the mentally and emotionally disturbed, which
is not a wonder.
Artists working in psychiatric hospitals realized that
exploring, sharing and discussing creation of a painting or
artwork forms the base of a therapeutic relationship due to
which, art as a therapy evolved into art therapy, or art
psychotherapy.
Art
therapies consists of four different and distinct therapies
i.e., Art
therapy, Music therapy, Drama therapy and Dance movement
therapy. Each
helps people with their psychological problems, self-realization
and their relationships with others, acting as a powerful and
exciting medium of self-expression.
The basic aim is to develop
deeper understanding and self-awareness, allowing people to
change or accept aspects that are preventing them from leading a
fulfilling and independent life.

Art
therapy:
It
helps in communication through creative use of paint,
pastels, clay or other art materials. The choice of medium and
creative work helps the therapist
in analyzing emotional and mental problems of people and giving
them space to express their feelings as they feel that they are threatened by
close relationships.
Dance
movement therapy:
It
uses movement techniques and dance to explore a patient's
emotional disturbance linked to their bodily experiences. Each has
an individual way of moving. The therapist observes and analyses
your expression through
the use of your body, she assesses your strengths and identifies
beneficial areas from the therapy. This is effective with young
children benefiting the mother/baby relationship if both are
undergoing therapy together.
Music
therapy:
Voices
or sounds produced by musical instruments are used by people in a
group as a means of expression. Their way of singing, playing and
communicating musically with others reflect their emotional or
social problems symbolizing feelings. It is a traditional form of
adolescent expression appropriate for hyperactive children, or
people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Drama
therapy:
It
uses various forms of drama developing creativity, imagination,
learning, insight and growth and when used in practice can
generate awareness, exploration and reflection of feelings and
relationships. It improves
relationships between couples, family or individuals within a
group, playing an important role in teaching social skills such as
assertiveness.
