Mind is an instrument for acquiring knowledge. It is the seat of consciousness, intelligence, memory and conscience. Thinking, reasoning, conceiving new ideas, taking decisions, meditating and controlling self are some of the important activities of mind.
Mind may also be considered as a special organ by which one experiences happiness and sorrow. It is the seat of all the desires, instincts and emotions as well as all the good and bad qualities of a person. Mind functions in intimate association and collaboration with other organs of the body. It serves to adjust the organism as a whole to the needs and demands of the environment.
Ayurveda defines mind as the organ, which is essential for acquiring knowledge. Presence of mind is essential for awareness of the information conveyed to us by our sense organs. If the eyes are looking at a scene, but the mind is engrossed elsewhere, one may not be aware of the scene.
We see dreams because of our mind. Sometimes we are unable to see a person physically present before us due to the concentration of the
mind somewhere else. All the above points prove the existence of
mind and brain is the seat of mind.
