Life itself consists of the physical body, the unconscious activity - prana and the conscious activity – mana. Mana is responsible for the conscious activity of the soul, and the indriyas (sense organs) help in this process.

The mana, which is super sensual, is designated as sattva –the ultimate truth and chetana (consciousness).

Functions
The functions of mana are dependent on the presence of mental objects and the spirit. It is the cause of activity of the sense organs. On account of the multiplicity of mental objects and sense-objects, impulses, as also the combination of the qualities of rajas, tamas and sattva, the mind appears as multi-faceted in one and the same person. There is no multiplicity of mind because a single mind cannot have contact with all sense objects simultaneously. Hence all sense organs cannot function at one and the same moment.

Perception is possible only when the sense organs led by mind are capable of contacting the sense objects. Along with mind, intellect and sense organs are the instruments of living for acquiring knowledge.

Mind acts as a mediator that links the soul to the body.
