Unmad means insanity and the different types in relation to the constitution of a person are
:
- Vatounmad
- Pittounmad
- Kaphounmad
- Tridoshasunmad
- Agantuj unmad

Vatounmad |
|
Vatounmad is caused when the vata in the body gets severely provoked due to intake of dry, or cold diet, or by excessive purificatory procedure or by atrophy of body-elements or by fasting or due to vitiation of the brain that is already overstressed, thus impairing the understanding and memory of the person.

Main Symptoms
of Vatounmad |

- Excessive laughing or smiling without any reason.
- Dancing in a very disorganized way.
- Singing loudly.
- Excessive talking.
- Disorganized body movements.
- Weeping uncontrollably and without any reason.
- Lean frame of body with dusky-red colouration of the skin.

Vatounmad-chikitsa (Treatment) |
|
First an unctuous potion should be given to the patient. Then, if the passages are obstructed, oleation should be accompanied by mild purificatory procedure.

Pittounmad |
|
The pitta that is accumulated as a result of taking predigested meals, or taking pungent, acidic, irritant or hot articles of food, is activated and thereby gets lodged in the brain of an undisciplined person and rapidly gives rise to acute maniacal symptoms.

of Pittounmad |

- Feelings of intolerance,
- Turbulence in the mind,
- Demonstration of nudity,
- Excessive fear,
- Disorganized behaviour accompanied by anger.

Pittounmad-chikitsa- (Treatment) |
|
The following types of treatment should be carried out for treating the person
:
- Oleation,
- Sudation,
- Vomiting,
- Purgation,
- Rehabilitation.

Kaphounmad |
|
In a person having sedentary habits, the kapha increases in the vital organs due to the combining of over-eating with heat and thereby impairs the intellect and memory, confounding the mind causing insanity.

Main symptoms
of Kaphounmad |

- Slowness of speech and action,
- Anorexia,
- Fondness for womankind,
- Feelings of solitude,
- Solemn demeanour ,
- Feelings of vomiting,
- Continuous dribbling of saliva,
- Pallor of the nails.
