Acupressure is performed by activating the relief points and applying pressure with the tip of your finger and rotating them in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction. This process can be repeated for a minute or so. Next,  massaging is done on these points at the rate of two or three cycles per second. These points are either single or double situated on the central line of the body. At the same time one needs to constantly keep asking questionsbto the patient like: "How are you feeling?", "Are you comfortable?", " Do you feel better, now?",  etc.

In case of harder skin, more force should be applied by doubling up with the middle finger on top of the index finger or with the thumb. Then gradually the pressure is increased according to the person's comfort. Communicating with the person is important to avoid any mistakes.

A new approach called 'on and off' is tried out on the patient when massaging of relief points id found to be ineffective.  off “ is tried out on the patient. In this activation is done for five to seven seconds and the process is halted for two to three seconds. This method is repeated seven times, sometimes, altering the pressure gradually with the ball of the thumb. Incase the on and off method proves ineffective too, then any one of the following steps may be tried.

a)   With the help of the rounded nail of the finger or thumb, pressure is applied slowly in increasing manner up to the level of the person's tolerance.

b) Alternatively, pressure is applied through a small rounded object having an area of a finger tip precisely about 1/8 inch in diameter of any other non-conductive material. Pressure is applied continuously for thirty to forty-five seconds.

c)   When a and b procedures are found ineffective, then the on and off method is applied for five to twenty seconds, for a period lasting for sixty seconds. During this period, care is taken to avoid any jerking or punching effect.

Lastly, pressure is applied up to the tolerance limit of the patient for five seconds and then gradually slackened for two seconds without releasing it and pushed again for another round.

The techniques involved in pressing and soothing of relief points are:

a)  Pressing is done with the bulb of the thumb, palm or elbow making forward/backward motions. In case of intensive pain in the muscles and joints due to higher penetration, elbows are used.

b)  Using the bulb of the thumb, the fingers or the palm of the hand for light and rapid motion. The same motion could be lightened by the use of feather on the tender and painful areas. The effect is totally electrifying.

c)  Pushing type of massage is done to stimulate or disperse the meridians on the back and the extremities by using the bulb of the thumb. Oil is used for higher lubrication and the frequency is  hundred or more strokes at one time/session.

d)  In Picking,  the thumb and index finger is used to pick-up the skin along with the muscles on the areas such as neck, face, back, etc.

e)  Massaging the arms and legs by simultaneously making use of  thumbs, fingers and palms of both hands is effective in the treatment of people with arthritis.

Light pressure is applied:
      a)    When the patient is a child or a woman having tender skin.

b)    When he or she is trying acupressure for the first time.

c)    When he or she is weak in health or overtired.

d)    When his/her muscles are weak or loose.

e)    When there is swelling, acute pain or some other
complication such as anemia, heart trouble or high blood
 pressure, etc.
