Severe inflammation  or burning damages the skin and leaves behind undesirable scars. If the burning is minor the injuries  heal with temporary discolouration. The scars of face heal and disappear at a faster pace than other parts of the body.

The scars can be made invisible by performing plastic surgery  along the expression line. Various body parts take a different time to heal. The back of the hands heal faster, the arms moderately and legs slowly. The burnt area is left badly scarred in leg area and if  chest and the upper back have unpleasant scars due to burn it take weeks to heal.

Causes
  • Sunlight consists of rays of different wavelength .They are very important to keep the skin healthy. But in certain cases they may also be very harmful to the skin.

  • Infrared rays are hot and give warmth to the body and ultra-violet provide vitamin D to it. But in case of excess  exposure  it  may cause skin burn.

  • Melanin, which lies below the skin, plays a very important role. It decides the colour of the skin. The darkness of skin is directly proportional to the quantity of the melanin present. It  also prevents the skin from getting burnt.

  • Sunrays are most  harmful for children, between 6 to 8 years of age, in women between 25 to 30 years of age and men between 30 to 35 years of age.

  • Due  to ultra-violet rays melanin in the body is damaged and the skin turns dark. Skin cracks due to the minute rays and dries the skin. Due to this, the skin swells and rashes appear on it.

  • Sunburn is similar to that of  burning by steam or very hot oil. The skin becomes  dry, the blood vessels swell and cells are damaged. Moderate sunburn  can be treated within three or four days while a strong sunburn causes rashes and the skin peels off in layers.

  • The new skin is developed later, but it is dry and thick  compared to the previous one.

  • Mostly brownish in colour, new skin  cracks and wrinkles easily. The treatment of  such wrinkles is not an easy task.

Treatment
  • Cold water bath is best for burnt patients. If rashes develop, skin specialist must be consulted immediately. Exposure  to sunrays must also be prohibited till the sunburn gets cured.
  • Tolerance to the sun may be according to the nature of the skin.
  • One must drink plenty of lemon water, for cooling effect during the hot summer noon ( between 12 noon and 2 o'clock) as the sun rays are hottest during this span.
