Agadtantra or toxicology deals with the signs, symptoms and management of poisoning resulting from the bites of snakes, insects, worms, spiders, rodents, etc. as well as from the combination of various other poisons.
In the context of animal poisons, poisoning by various types of snakes, scorpion, spiders and insect-bites are described in ancient texts like
Ayurveda. The exact diagnosis of poison is necessary so that the use of antidote may be decided accordingly.

The common clinical features of poisoning are as follows

- Tingling sensation all over the body.
- Eruption of patches over skin.
- Yawning and sweating.
- The patient twists, turns and bends his/her body.
- Craving for cold things.
- Depending upon the amount of vitiation of doshas by particular poison, the symptoms of the same predominates.
If the poison has entered the head region of the body, then there is eruption over the face and the face swells up. The palate starts drying. There is severe headache and malfunctioning of the sense organs. Lastly when the poison has spread all through the body, death results.
