Prakruti means innate nature, character, physical constitution or disposition of a person. According to Ayurveda, from birth to death, doshas influence the health status and physical constitution of a man, either positively or negatively.

In fact the predominance of a particular dosha is decided right at the time of conception itself, hence the word Prakruti that in itself means naturally endowed or inherited characteristics.

The concentration levels and preponderance of each dosha in an individual is believed to be genetically determined. Therefore, doshas in different permutations and combinations constitute the very nature/disposition of a man. This is known as Prakruti / Shareer Prakruti.

Importance of Prakruti

It is always good for an intelligent person to know as to what type of conduct and food would be appropriate for his physical disposition, i.e., Prakruti. By a careful understanding about our own prakriti we can avoid a lot many diseases. It also helps in comprehending some important physical and mental characteristics.

Prakruti is an important criterion for evaluating an individual’s status of physical constitution. This helps in deciding the therapeutic regimen.

Factors determinig prakruti
  • Sukra-Shonit Prakruti - condition of sperm-ovum.
  • Kala-garbhasaya Prakruti - condition of uterus.
  • Matu-ahar Prakruti - food regimen adopted by mother during pregnancy.
Types
Depending on the predominance of a single dosha, or different permutations and combinations, Prakruti could be of seven types:
  • Vata,
  • Pitta,
  • Kapha,
  • Vata-pitta
  • Vata-kapha,
  • Pitta-kapha and
  • Sama-dosha (balance of all three).

Acharya Susruta, the father of Indian surgery had a belief that at times, the blood (Rakta dhatu), also gets vitiated, and acts as a dosha; hence he included one more prakruti in his list i.e. Rakta Prakruti.
