• Shalakya tantra deals with the etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, complications and treatment of the disease of eyes, ears, nose, throat and head. 
• In short, it gives detailed information about the disease, which are Urdhvajatrugat (above neck).
• It can also be defined as the branch of Ayurveda where ‘Shalaka’ (small rod) is used for treatment.
• In Shalakya tantra, pathology and treatment of the diseases related to the ear, nose, Corrhyza and head are described. 
• There is description of surgery of adhrush (palatitis), cleft lip, auroplasty, rhinoplasty, upnah, tundikeri, parvanika, cataract etc. 
   

             Ayurveda-the science of life, which was preached by Lord Brahma, although being thousands of years old, has mentioned certain techniques, which stand apt even through present times. This is the beauty of Ayurveda, as these techniques, which are practiced by surgeons of modern times in modified form, came into being thousands of years ago even despite the lack of modern facilities.
             Some surgeries like rhinoplasty, cataract, cleft lip and cleft palate, tonsillectomy, etc. have been mentioned in the ancient authentic scripts of Sushruta. Various methods to anaesthetize the patient and to relieve pain have also been mentioned.
