Acupuncture, the traditional Chinese art of healing is said to
be more than 5000 years old. But its origin is still
disputed. The Chinese claim it to be their own science. Some
believe that it originated during the Indus Valley
civilization and then spread to Central Asia, Egypt, China and
other countries. Some believe that it originated in India and
then spread to other countries through Buddhist monks.
There are others who are of the belief that the word
Acupuncture is neither Chinese nor Indian but Latin. Acu means needle and puncture means
penetration. Hence simply we can say penetration of needle
means Acupuncture. Thus we can define Acupuncture as “Accurate Puncturing of the points on body with the help of the needle to remove the disorders or ailments or cure the disease”.
Whatever may be the dispute regarding the origin of acupuncture but it is true that it was discovered
due to the pain and suffering of warriors during battles in
the olden days. A warrior was wounded in the leg by an arrow
during a battle.
After removing the arrow his long standing chronic stomach ailment
was relieved completely. Thus it was a boon in disguise for
the warrior.
Acupuncture treatment is carried out by inserting a few fine
needles into various points of the body. The effect of the
needles is to restore the balance of the patients’ energy
and thereby improve their health. Acupuncture treatment both
addresses specific symptoms and has overall effect whereby
patients often feel better after treatment.
Acupuncture has proved effective in curing various diseases,
which are resistant to conventional methods of treatment. It
has come up not only as an anaesthetic agent for all sorts of
surgical procedures but also as a new approach to the
conditions like psoriasis, sensor neural deafness, various
forms of addictions and psychiatric problems. Besides being
free from side effects commonly encountered in drug therapy it
is simple, safe, effective and economical.
