Diet therapy in different illnesses involves a detailed study and is very difficult to present in a concise form. Still a brief idea about the subject has been portrayed for general guidance. 

Common Ailments

Common Diseases

Aids
  • Avoid undercooked and unwashed foods, raw or lightly cooked eggs, and pasteurized dairy products.
  • Cut down on tea, coffee, colas and alcohol.
  • Eat plenty of wholegrain fruits and vegetables, nuts and pasteurised dairy products.
Arthritis
  • Cut down on highly refined foods, saturated fats, sugar and salt if suffering from osteo-arthritis.
  • Eat plenty of wholegrain cereals, fresh fruits, vegetables, soybeans, tofu and fish.
Asthma
  • Avoid foods that trigger attacks e.g., foods containing additives benzoates, sulphate or gallants; cider, wine and beer, bread, drinks and snacks containing colourings; cows milk, cereals, eggs, fish and nuts (especially peanuts).
  • Eat plenty of foods rich in B vitamins such as green leafy vegetables and pulses and rich in magnesium such as sunflower seeds and dried figs.
Diabetes
  • Cut down on sugary sweetened soft drinks, cakes, confectionery and chocolate; limit salt and salty foods; reduce alcohol intake; cut down on fats.
  • Eat more starchy and high fiber foods such as whole meals bread, beans, peas and lintels; eat lot of fresh fruits and vegetables for soluble fibers and vitamins; drink water or sugar free drinks.
Gastroenteritis
  • Take plenty of water to replace lost fluid, bananas for potassium, boiled white rice and dry white toast for low fiber carbohydrate, apples to cleanse the digestive system.
Jaundice
  • Avoid alcohol 
  • Cut down on spicy and fatty foods.
  • Eat plenty of soybean, egg and fish for protein, iron and B vitamins, green cabbage and pulses for folate, Oats etc.
Migraine
  • Avoid (specially during attack)
    • chocolate, cheese, citrus fruits and coffee
    • alcohol
    • garlic, onion, back grapes,
    • tea
    • all eatables having 'tyramine' e.g. dates, bananas spinach, eggs, broad beans, Soya sauce, fig prunes etc.
    • nitrates and nitrites used as preservatives for some foods.
  • Take plenty of
    • regular light meals to prevent a drop in blood sugar levels
    • ginger in cooking or freshly grated with boiling water as tea
    • magnesium rich foods.
Obesity
  • Avoid
    • Full fat dairy products and snacks such as biscuits, cakes, chips and nuts
    • Non-vegetarian foods containing high fat
    • Alcohol.
  • Eat plenty of
    • complex carbohydrates found in pasta, potatoes, brown rice and wholegrain wheat
    • fresh fruits, vegetables, salads and pulses.
Sinusitis
  • Eat plenty of:
    • fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamin C
    • shellfish and nuts  for zinc
    • wholegrain cereals and pulses for B- Vitamins
    • sunflower seeds, seed oils and avocados for vitamin E
    • garlic and onions
    • decongestant herbs and spices such as ginger.

     

Common Ailments

 
Insomnia
  • Avoid late night meals that are greasy, spicy, rich or heavy.
  • Cut down on caffeine found in coffee, tea, cola drinks and chocolate.
  • Take plenty of
    • sweetened milky malted bedtime drinks or other hot drinks with honey.
    • starchy foods such as pasta, rice and potatoes in the evening meal.
Infertility
  • Cut down on alcohol, tea, canned and highly refined foods
  • Eat plenty of
    • citrus fruits for Vitamin. C
    • nuts, sunflower and sesame seeds and shellfish for zinc
    • iron rich foods
    • brown rice, wheat germ, pluses, oily fish and fresh nuts for Vitamin B and E
    • soybeans, almonds and whole meals bread for magnesium.
  • Influenza
  • Take plenty of fluids specially diluted fruits juices, small light meals.

 

Indigestion
  • Avoid heavy for fatty meals at night and smoking.
  • Cut down on:
    • Alcohol
    • refined carbohydrates
    • deep fried foods with a high fat content
    • coffee
  • Eat plenty of
    • fresh fruits
    • vegetables and vegetable juices,
    • herbs and certain spices to improve digestion
Acne
  • Cut down chocolates and sweets, highly salted snacks and extra sugar.
  • Eat plenty of shellfish, nuts etc., for zinc and fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamin C.
Impotence
  • Cut down on Alcohol, coffee, tea, cola drinks and smoking.
  • Eat plenty of zinc rich foods.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
  • Avoid alcohol.
  • Cut down on salt and caffeine (in tea, coffee etc.)
  • Eat plenty of
    • small frequent meals high in carbohydrate and low in fat.
    • foods containing Vitamin. B such as fish and wholegrain.
