Rasashastra is Ayurvedic pharmaceutics, which deals with the drugs of mineral origin, their varieties, characteristics, processing techniques, properties and their therapeutic uses.
It also includes the descriptions of apparatus (crucibles), different kinds of furnaces, heating devices and heating schedules.
The term ‘Rasashastra’ is composed of two words
‘Rasa’ and ‘Shastra’ where Rasa means absorbable form of drugs and
Shastra means science of knowledge.
Thus, ‘Rasashastra’ means the science of conversion of the drugs, irrespective of their nature (herbal, mineral, animal) into rasa form, which can be easily absorbed and assimilated.
Mercury being in liquid form at room temperature, possesses the capacity of dissolving other metals in it, i.e. in liquid/rasa form.

- In this branch of Ayurveda, there is description of various instruments used for the preparation of the medicines from the minerals and also for the extraction of metals from their ores.
- Various devices like dola yantra, patana yantra, damruka
yantra, swedan yantra, valuka yantra, bhudhara
yantra, etc. have been described under yantras.
- Also one finds the description of many combinations of various drugs, herbs useful for different procedures like
satvapatana, metal extraction, purification and formulations of minerals in
paribhasa.
- The ancient chemists after classifying mercury as the rasa after which this branch has been named, classified the other metals, minerals and gems into
dhatu, upadhatu, ratna, upratna, maharasa, uprasa, sadhrana rasa and sudha
varga.
Rasa (Mercury)
- Mercury, which is movable and silvery like white shiny metal is found in a liquid form. It is called Rasa as it is the physical essence of Lord Shiva and also as it swallows other metals.
- It is rightly called Parada as it helps man to cross the ocean of worldly and physical miseries and thus provides him both liberation and enjoyment.
