Diseases due to the deficiency of proteins and calories that occur commonly among weaned infants and preschool children are classified as :-

Kwashiorkor.
This disease is  caused by the deficiency of protein in the diet.
 
 Symptoms include-
    i) Edema
    ii) Muscular wasting.
    iii) Fatty Liver.
    iv) Growth failure.
    v) Changes in color of skin and hair.
    vi) Loss of appetite and diarrhea.
 
Nutritional Marasmus.
This disease is caused by a severe deficiency of proteins and calories in the diet.
 
 Symptoms include.
 

     i) Growth retardation.
     ii) Severe wasting of muscle.
     iii) Loss of subcutaneous fat.
     iv) Dry skin and atrophic.
     vi) Anemia 
     vii) Dehydration.
 
Marasamic Kwashiorkor. 
Children suffering from this disease show signs of both Kwashiorkor and Marasmus
