Toothache
|
|
-
Pain in one or more teeth is a symptom of an underlying problem with the teeth or gums.
-
Toothache may last only a few minutes, or it may be
continuous.
-
Depending on the cause, the pain may vary from a dull ache to a severe throbbing sensation.
|
Symptoms
|
|
-
The symptom of the early stages of tooth decay is a sharp pain triggered by biting or consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
-
Receding gums.
-
A fractured tooth.
-
Advanced gum disease may also result due to toothache.
-
Due to inflammation of the gums and buildup of plaque (a deposit of food particles, mucus and bacteria) a dull pain in the teeth while chewing can be caused.
-
Food trapped between the teeth can also result in dull pain.
-
A persistent severe, throbbing pain is usually the result of advanced tooth decay , in which the pulp, or central part of the tooth containing the nerves and blood vessels, becomes inflamed.
-
If the pain enhances so that the tooth becomes tender to
touch, it may indicate that pulpitis has developed into a dental
abscess at the root, with infection and death of the pulp
tissues.
-
In case the infection spreads to the surrounding tissues and fever, sometimes the facial swelling can also occur.
-
Enlargement and tender of lymph nodes in the neck can also occur..
-
Emergence of wisdom teeth may cause pain and tenderness at the back of the mouth.
-
If the wisdom teeth has only partially emerged or grown in the wrong direction it can cause tremendous pain in the gums.
-
In certain cases toothache occurs as a result of a disorder
elsewhere in the body, such as sinusitis an ear infection or a
problem in the joint between the jaw and the skull.

Treatment
|
|
-
If you have toothache, you should consult your dentist immediately.
-
If you have a fever and /or a swollen face in addition to toothache, you should see a dentist immediately.
-
Use analgesic, such as aspirin and acetaminophen, in order to relieve toothache while you are waiting for an appointment.
-
Rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater may also help.
-
Clove oil also help soothe the pain when applied to the tooth.
-
The most secure remedy for the affected tooth is to be treated by a dentist.
-
Your dentist will ask you about your symptoms and examine your teeth and gums. He or she may also take X-rays of your mouth to look for decay.
-
If toothache is caused by decay, your dentist will remove the decayed areas and may put in an ordinary filling to stop the pain and prevent further decay.
-
If you have gingivitis, dentist will probably remove the plaque by scaling the teeth. He or she may also prescribe antibiotics for an infection.
-
If tooth decay is advanced and you have pulpitis or a dental
abscess, you may need root canal treatment in which the soft
tissues within the tooth are removed.
-
The cavity is sterilized to clear up the infection, and the root canals and decayed area are filled permanently.
-
A tooth that is very badly damaged or decayed and painful, impacted wisdom teeth may be extracted.
-
If toothache is due to a condition such as sinusitis or an ear infection, you may need to consult your doctor for the necessary treatment.
-
To prevent toothache, brush and floss your teeth
and gums regularly. You should also have regular dental checkups
