The most important factor for a vibrant and sparkling eyes are that they should be clear and healthy. If the eyes ever get infected, or have any vision defects, an eye specialist should be consulted immediately for proper treatment. Some problems and their natural remedies have been discussed here.

Dark Circle
Doctor's consultation is a must in these cases. But sometimes they can be caused by simple factors like lack of sleep or a crash diet. Very often, the dark circles are a part of one's complexion. If dark circles are due to any of the causes other than heredity, the following remedies will prove useful:-

  • Lie down on board, raised at one end and your head should be on the raised side. Now place cold cucumber slices over the closed eyelids. Relax for 10 to 15 minutes. Tea bags stored in the freezer can be used for the same purpose.

  • Red eyes accompany dark circles if the eyes are tired, eyewash should be used. This eyewash can be prepared by adding a tablespoon of Epsom salt to a cup of hot water. It should be followed by a few eye drops. Rose water also makes an ideal eye wash. It gives freshness to dull eyes.

  • Tired and aching eyes can be relieved by gentle massage. Using the tips of the middle fingers, exert gentle pressure from the bridge of the nose and tapping across the eyelids and back under the eyes half a dozen times. Then press quite hard on either side of the bridge of the nose close to the inner eye.

Lines and Wrinkles
Due to excessive dryness of the skin and loss of tone by tiny muscles around the eyes wrinkles and lines are caused. A good moisturizer lavishly applied after cleansing and toning will take care of parched skin. Light- weight oil like safflower oil or corn oil is an ideal lubricant for eyes and areas around the eyes.

Points to Remember
  • Chief vitamin associated with the eyes is Vitamin - A.

  • It's sources are butter, margarine, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, milk, kidney, turnip-tops, carrot juice etc

  • If eyes become red, swollen and you have an uncomfortable feeling of sandiness under the eyelids, the reason is probably an insufficiency of Vitamin B2 (riboflavin).

  • Vitamin B2 is found in yeast, green vegetables, milk, livers, egg, fish and kidney.

  • Routine exercises too can sometimes strengthen the weakened eye muscles and help clear up faulty vision.

  • When eyesight becomes less of a strain, unattractive squint lines and crows- feet begin to disappear.
