Once you have decided to adopt a baby the next step is to get started. You can either make calls to the various adoption centres, or attend seminars or enquire adoptive parents to get an idea of the various procedures and the best adoption centres. Thus you can focus your efforts as you begin your search for a child.

You can make telephone calls to Adoptive Families in India who would have a large number of affiliated parent groups whose members could be of assistance and support or you could call up adoptive parent groups in your area. Ask about their experiences with the adoption process and with bringing new children into their homes.

Local public and private adoption agencies should also be contacted to find the one that is right for you. Ask whether they are currently accepting applications for the type of child you want to adopt and also about their costs and procedures. Finally, how long it will take to have your adoption completed.

Then you can attend conferences and meetings about adoption. As you prepare to adopt, it is important to give ample time and attention to the preparation stage. You will find that in the long run, every moment you invest in preparation will pay off handsomely in the ultimate results of a happier and more successful parenting experience.

Take a look at your self, your surroundings and lifestyle. Consider the following questions independently and with your partner in adoption.

  • What adjustments will need to be made?

  • Are you ready and able to make these adjustments?

  • Will you be better able to adjust to an infant or an older child?

  • Is my lifestyle predictable or unpredictable?

  • Do you have the stamina and energy to keep up with the needs of a child?

  • Will you be able to make changes and adjustments in your physical surroundings and lifestyle in order to accommodate the needs of a child?

  • Are you a confident person, secure in yourself? Or do you have a lot of unresolved insecurities?

  • If education is important to you will you be able to understand if a child you adopt is not capable of achieving educationally at the level you had hoped?

  • What is your definition of parenting?

  • What role does religion play in your life?

  • How will your view of the importance of a spiritual life change upon the addition of a child in your family?

  • What extra financial resources do you expect to need and what sources do you have available to draw upon?

These questions are just guidelines to help you think through the multitude of issues, challenges, adjustments and concerns that you may need to cope with upon making the transition into adoptive parenthood. Answering these questions for yourself and discussing them candidly with your partner will impact your life and future.

The other thing to remember is that no one is ever totally prepared to become a parent, or to adopt. You do the best you can to prepare, plan and hedge your bets. Then, the rest of family-making is about love, mystery, magic and hope.
