Early and provident ear is the mother of safety. Hence you should always be aware of the warning signs of labour. Once the signs are clear it is time to rush to the hospital.

Lightening or Dropping

This refers to the foetus head setting into the pelvis.
After lightening,

  • Abdomen may appear lower and protrude more.

  • Breathing becomes easier, relief from heartburn.

  • Greater frequency of urination due to lightening.

  • Backache increases.

A Show

The plug of thick, blood stained mucus that blocks the neck of the womb in pregnancy usually passes out of the vagina, either before or during the early stages of labour.

Breaking of the Amniotic sac

The bag of fluid that surrounds the baby can break any time during labour. It may be a sudden flood, but its far more common to notice trickle of fluid, as the baby's head has often engaged.

Contractions

These may start off as a dull backache, or there may be shooting pains down the thighs. As time goes on, the contractions can be felt in the stomach.

False Labour

Throughout pregnancy, the womb contracts. In the last weeks, these contractions become stronger so they may be misjudged as labour pains. But true labour contractions occur very regularly, grow stronger and more frequent.
