 Occipito posterior position of vertex

 
Definition

The occipital region of the head lies in the right or the left side at the back of the uterus

 
Causes
  • Faults in the passage (pelvic cavity).
     

  • Faults in the passenger (baby).
     

  • Faults in power i.e. the uterine inertia.

 

 Face Presentation

 
Definition

The face with chin presents while it is completely extended. Face presentation comprises of mouth, nose, and eyes.

 
Causes
  • Faults in the passage (pelvic cavity).
     
  • Faults in the passenger (baby).
     
  • Malformed foetus.
 

  Brow Presentation

 
Definition

Brow or forehead presents when foetal head lies midway between being fully extended or fully bent.

  
Causes
  • Faults in the passage (pelvic cavity).
     
  • Faults in the passenger (baby).
     
  • Malformed foetus.
 

  Breech Presentation

Definition

This is the presentation of the lower extremeties comprising of buttocks with lower limbs or knee or foot while the foetal remains longitudinal.

 
Causes
  • Faults in passenger e.g. extended legs
     
  • Faults in the passage: e.g. placenta previa, hydroaminios (i.e. large amount of amnionic fluid in the uterus) etc.
 

  Shoulder presentation and transverse lie

Definition

The shoulder presents when the foetus is lying with its long axis transversely or obliquely across the uterus; the lie is usually oblique. The presenting part is commonly shoulder.

 
Causes
  • Fault in the passage (i.e in the pelvic cavity)
     
  • Faults in passenger. (i.e.the baby)
