Inadequacy of Milk | Important Factors

Excess of breast milk leads to engorgement, heaviness and pain in the breast. If the baby intakes excess of breast milk, the baby develops nausea, vomiting, pain in abdomen, diarrhoea and fever.

Treatment
  • It consists of removal of breast milk and local application on the breast with paste of turmeric and roots of Dhatura.

  • Tight brassieres should be worn. Massage and fomentation are contraindicated, as these procedures might result in abscess formation.

  • Light diet, emetics and purgatives should be taken for more benefits.
Factors suppressing breast milk
  • Absence of maternal instinct and psychological factors like anger, sorrow and grief suppress the secretion of breast milk.

  • Dietetic factors like starvation, fasting or inadequate diet and physical factors like exercise, exertion and fatigue suppress the breast milk secretion.

  • Chronic diseases and ill health of the mother also result in inadequate secretion.

  • Induction of emesis or purgation in the mother suppresses the breast milk secretion.
